Within the scope of peacekeeping operations, women have found a new path for their professional and human development. Working side by side with their male counterparts and facing the challenge of gender stereotypes, many women have learnt how to leverage their innate capabilities to perform certain specific actions in the field. Their differential value has made female peacekeepers a highly-deemed human resource in today’s peacekeeping operations.
In 1993, women accounted for only 1% of deployed troops. At present, they account for 3% of the total military personnel and 9% of the total police personnel deployed by all troop-contributing countries in these missions. In the case of Latin America, women’s presence represents 3.31% of all troops deployed. Women´s involvement in peacekeeping operations – whether as policewomen, civilians or military members– effectively serves to attain a security environment, while motivating other women and girls affected by the conflict to fight for their rights and become actively involved in peace processes. They represent an operating human resource capable of rendering assistance to former women combatants during the demobilization process and their reinsertion into civilian life, as well as to interview gender-violence victims and interact with other local women. The adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) shows the organization´s clear commitment to introduce the gender perspective into peacekeeping activities, while encouraging troop-contributing countries to adopt the necessary measures to support this effort.
